homemade croutons and blue cheese dressing

I had a bit of old bread so I decided to make some homemade croutons for a nice big salad. As I was preparing everything I also noticed a new package of blue cheese in the refrigerator. Light bulb! Blue cheese dressing! I mean honestly, what's better than blue cheese dressing?! I whipped up a dressing inspired by a couple different recipes by mixing (pretty standard) sour cream, red wine vinegar, garlic, mayonnaise, cracked pepper, milk and lots and lots of blue cheese!

Hurricane Sandy has already come and gone in Miami, but Friday's high winds caused our walk for Alzheimer's to be cancelled. All the Miami teams are invited to walk at the Broward event on November 10th for everyone wanting to attend. Once again thank you for all the support, especially Krista and Kason who came all the way down from Missouri to participate! Thank you!

I'm sending all my love to friends and family on the northeast during this horrible storm. Be safe.

Alzheimer's Walk - October 27th

Team Lane also has 7 team members including one of my best friends Krista, who is coming all the way from Missouri to walk along with my sister and niece who are driving from Ft Myers! I love that "fast food" can be a locally owned spot that serves homemade soups, salads, and empanadas.

 My favorites: the cranberry chicken mini salad, classic Argentine or tomato, mozzarella, basil empanada, and whatever soup they are serving.

Ingrid Michaelson at the Culture Room

For years I have been in love with Ingrid Michaelson. Her Girls and Boys album (as well as Regina Spektor's Begin to Hope) narrated 2007 for me. I had an incredible time seeing Ingrid at the Culture Room for the first time with some of my very favorite people.

sesame seared tofu

Somehow all three of my classes were cancelled today, giving me the day to wake up early, do some website work, and clean the house (thank you Michael for the team effort!). After cleaning I was, of course, ravenous and decided to make tofu. It's a pretty quick lunch that can easily be thrown together, along with a lot of possible variations (mushrooms, cabbage, whatever you need to use in your fridge). The smells are absolutely incredible: garlic, fresh ginger and especially the sesame oil one of my favorite scents ever! Sometimes I find myself at night just sauntering into the kitchen for a quick whiff of it . . . though I guess that's kind of weird. . . 

Tofu - cut tofu into desired size. Remove excess water by pressing tofu 'steaks' between a couple paper towels. Cover with sesame seeds and sear in a hot pan with sesame oil and garlic.

Place over rice and top with desired toppings. I chose raw chopped ginger, grated carrots, green onions, bonito flakes, soy sauce, and korean chili paste. I served this with a simple cucumber salad for a light but filling lunch.

Breakfast Pita Pizza

Put a layer of ham and green peppers on your pita, top with two scrambles eggs, then pepper jack cheese. Place in the toaster oven on toast (or oven on broil) until the cheese melts. Finish with avocado and green onions. Perfect for two. I shared mine with my smelly boyfriend.

I had the luxury of spending Tuesday with one of my favorite and first Miami friends. She moved away from Miami about seven years ago but we have kept in touch as she bounced around from LA and Vegas, to her current residence in Hawaii. I checked out the new jewelry for her incredible line By Chari and I am decked out with some of her stunning bracelets in the photo below along with the lovely Chari herself.
